Following the referencing guidelines your university department specifies is important for your written assignments. Often a specific number of marks are available for correct and thorough referencing. ‘Name-date’ systems like the Harvard system, where short citations are included in brackets in the text, are becoming more popular than systems in which full references to sources are set out in notes at the bottom of each page (footnotes) or at the end of the piece of work (endnotes).

Whichever particular system you choose, BE CONSISTENT: you must maintain exactly the same style of citation throughout each piece of work. Similarly, the style used in the bibliography should mirror that employed in the references or notes. As well as acknowledging intellectual debt, this shows you are conscientious about the presentation of your work, and are keen to maintain the highest academic standards.

When you are writing your dissertation or thesis your university will assign you a supervisor to give you help and guidance and most students find this really helpful. Masters students may be able to meet or speak by phone to their supervisors every three or four weeks during the summer.

Of course there are times when you would really like a quick answer to a question that is holding you up or for some to check a paragraph not a whole chapter and you don’t want to wait until the next meeting. Also, to avoid getting too many negative comments from your supervisor many students prefer to have their work checked by someone else first as well as edited and proofread. It’s much better to give your supervisor the best possible draft of each chapter rather than get them thinking negatively about your work.

I offer a personal supervisor service to Masters and Phd students as they complete their dissertations and theses. Here is what I do:

Email or telephone advice available at short notice so there are no delays

Research sources so you don’t miss any important ones

Give you a framework to help you organise your literature review

Provide written commentaries on your chapters

Paraphrase sentences which are too close to other sources

Check your work for plagiarism

Proofreading and Editing

Review your data analysis to make sure you have found all the key findings

Anything else you need

Example Fees: for two hours per week on these tasks £29.95 - Four hours per week £49.95. Proofreading and editing is charged per 1000 words – more details here.

The Introduction will receive close attention from your dissertation committee. Some experts have recommended writing it at the end but because writing it will help get things clear in your mind in simpler language it is probably better to start with it. If you are following your proposal closely then make sure this is used in preparation of the introduction. A good formula for you introduction is to put the issue in context as concisely as possible. Answer the question: why do this study? Why now? Why here? Why me? State the aims of the study.

Chapter one is very important and is possibly best put together by following a list of questions:

Is there a problem?

What is it?

Why does it need to be solved?

What is your hypothesis (hunch – if you have one)?

Who will benefit from your investigation?

In what sense will they benefit?

How will it contribute to what is already known?

How in general terms are you going to solve the problem, e.g., collect data, analyse data?

By what methods (no detail)? E.g., a qualitative case study approach.

What are the limitations of the study?

A good way to end the introduction is to state the dissertation objectives. Don’t forget that this is a consise intro for your reader to the subject, to put the issue in context. The background and history will be dealt with elsewhere.

Avoid using jargon in the introduction and keep your language a little more simple than in the following chapters. Also, don’t clutter up your introduction with citations, this should not be necessary as this is your summary of the study.

Good luck and if you need any further help whether it is writing, editing or proofreading then just contact me.

Paraphrasing is an art and a difficult one at that. For those who are trying to paraphrase in a language that is not their native tongue it is virtually impossible. So what is the answer?

International students often find that despite achieving the IELTS score their university requested once they have begun their studies they find that they lose marks on their assignments because of mistakes in their written English. Sometimes they have to resubmit because they have not been able to paraphrase their sources well enough meaning that they show a high plagiarism percentage.

It’s not cheap to come to the UK to study so it must be very frustrating that you may not get the grade you deserve even when you have the right IELTS score. The problem is that rewriting sentences published in another source is extremely difficult even for most native speakers.

I am a Cambridge certified English teacher and I have twenty years experience in magazine publishing, so working with words is basically what my working life has been about. One of the skills I have developed is the ability to rewrite/ paraphrase texts. Students regularly send me essays and other assignments that they feel may show a high level of plagiarism. My editing is fast and effective and starts with a plagiarism check to see what the percentage is before I get to work. Essays which start out as high 50% plagiarised are returned with an acceptable level of between 5% and 15% along with another plagiarism report to show this. The student gets the grade they deserve and does have the stress and worry that they will get in serious trouble.

Completing your coursework assignments is a major challenge if English is not your first language. You know what you want to say in your own language but how to you put the same point across in English. You have read and understood an important source but how do you paraphrase it properly? If you don’t you could be in trouble for plagiarism.

Plagiarism, a word students worry about more than any other. If your supervisor feels the writing in your assignment may not be your own then he or she may use the Universities account with Turnitin to check your file. If it shows a high level, perhaps over 20% then you may well have a serious problem. If you are lucky your supervisor may give you a chance to rewrite and resubmit the assignment but in many cases the university could start disciplinary proceedings straight away.

The penalties for plagiarism can be heavy. You may be failed for that academic year and have to retake it or be expelled altogether from the institution. For students in the UK on a student visa the situation is even more complicated. Plagiarism can lead to loss of student status and possible deportation!

If all this sounds gloomy then let’s be positive. There is no reason to take these risks. Your assignments can be checked before you they are submitted and any problems can be put right well before your deadline. Let’s have a look at this short video to see how this works.

Why consider using a proofreading service? Having your written and work proofread is an essential part of the writing process and you should make sure that you leave enough time for this once the writing is finished. Often when you have been working for a long time on an assignment it is difficult to be objective about it. So it is helpful to take a break from your assignment and hand it over to someone else for the proofreading. Proofreading is checking over a draft to make sure that everything is complete and correct as far as spelling, grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, and such matters go; it’s a necessary, if somewhat tedious and tricky job. It needs to be done after your writing and revisions have been completed.

You can, of course, ask a friend to read it for you; for the best results, however, a professional proofreader is the option most likely to really give your marks a boost. A lack of proofreading not only makes the writer look a little ignorant when there are glaring grammatical or spelling mistakes, it’s also a testament to the overall quality of what is written.

Universties suggest that proofreading can add 10% to the overall mark if done by a professional. A proofreading service is usually conducted by email and a good proofreader will always give you a version of the document showing all the changes that have been made. Professional editors can proofread your document so that the final product is well-written, precise, and easy to read.
Choosing a dissertation topic? The best dissertation topics don’t just pop into your head they require research which can be both in depth and time consuming.

Remember to listen to your fellow students, your lecturers and of course your supervisor. Balance their thoughts with the fact that if you are personally interested in finding the answers to your research question(s) you are more likely to produce a good piece of work.

One simple technique is to keep a study ‘diary’ or notebook during your Masters year and jot down any areas, questions, ideas that particularly interest you. If it still interests you at the time you sit down to write your proposal then you could have found what you’re looking for. But if you haven’t done this and decision time is approaching then another method is needed.

It’s always a good idea to start off with a short list then slowly work towards the final chosen topic. If a topic on your short list has recently been covered by someone else then take it off your list. You can usually find this out from your supervisor.

Above all when choosing your topic always continually ask yourself the question – how will I collect the primary data for my study.

In fact deciding on the topic, framing the research question and deciding the basics of your methodology all need to be done in parallel rather than in isolation.

For some though the blockage in deciding on a topic is simply impossible to overcome. Perhaps you’re too close to the topic to take

a step back and see what the key questions that deserve study really are. If you feel like this then you could always bring in someone else to unblock the process and give you some fresh thinking. It may feel like you have a long time to prepare and submit your dissertation but time spent deciding on you dissertation topic could be spent on research and writing.
